Biography

Janet started Mrs. McGarrigle’s in 1988, making small-batch mustards and chutneys, manufacturing out of the historic former Ottawa City Jail kitchen. The first three products, Hot Whiskey Mustard, Apple Rum Chutney, and Cajun Spice were sold at craft shows, and wholesaled to retail shops.

New flavours and combinations were added every year, and mustard quickly became a specialty.

Today, Janet and her 3 kitchen staff at Mrs. McGarrigle’s produce 14 flavours of specialty mustards, 2 chutneys, and three vinaigrettes, which are shipped to a growing list of over 400 retailers across the country.

A growing segment of the kitchen production involves making bulk mustards and chutneys for hotels, golf courses, and restaurants.

Mrs. McGarrigle’s retail location was opened in 1993. The initial kitchen and retail store was a modest 450 sq. ft. in all.  The current location in Merrickville, a c1888 general store and former telephone exchange, was bought and renovated in 1999, which brought the square footage to 3000 sq. ft., including the new production kitchen.

Mrs. McGarrigle’s was named Retailer of the Year by the Canadian Gift & Tableware Assocation in 2007. McGarrigle’s products have won several awards, and have been featured in many publications, including Food & Drink, Chatelaine, Go Porter, Ottawa Citizen, Globe & Mail, Toronto Life and on CBC and CTV .
